Yay! A new walking (and possibly biking trail) for North Seattle is in the works! This will be a welcome relief for the crowded Green Lake path.
With about 200 acres, Jackson Park Golf Course is the largest green space in Seattle. Located on the North Seattle boundary (NE 145th Street) and seen from the freeway, the trail will be a significant improvement for the neighborhoods in the area.
The North Seattle local community, (Friends of Jackson Park Trail), along with Seattle Parks Department and Seattle City Department of Neighborhoods are working together on plans to develop a 4 mile trail around the perimeter of the golf course.
The Friends of Jackson Park Trail is made up of volunteer residents. They have been awarded $15,000 grant from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. So far, they have formed a steering committee, developed the visioning plan and then used the grant money to hire a landscape architect consultant.
Larson Casteel was selected to develop the North Seattle trail plan and prepare a preliminary cost estimate. They will also record feedback from the public meetings. The first of three public meetings will be held Tuesday, June 22 at Jackson Park Golf Course.
This first meeting will include an update on the work performed so far, gathering input to develop the trail design and a presentation of the site analysis.
Concern about wetlands, preservation of habitat areas and green space, green infrastructure techniques, public safety, connection to other existing green spaces and future plans for the area such as the light rail station are all consideration in the creation of the trail.
Completion of the Jackson Park Golf Course Trail is expected in a couple of years. Jackson Park is one of four public golf courses and one of two which are included in a city wide initiative called "Bands of Green" to develop bicycle and pedestrian trails and linear parks in Seattle.
